The 2018 -2019 Season at The Lyric Stage in Irving, TX

Disney’s NEWSIES

September 21-23, 2018

Disney’s Newsies, based on the 1992 motion picture, features a score by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by four-time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux FollesTorch Song Trilogy). The Broadway production received 23 major theatrical nominations – including eight Tony Award nominations – and won Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Score and Choreography.

Set in New York City at the turn of the century, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged “newsies,” who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right.

Lyric Stage THE MAJESTIC UNPLUGGED

THE MAJESTIC UNPLUGGED

November 16-18, 2018

Enjoy splendid songs from the glory days of The Majestic Theatre — unamplified by electronics — in the magnificent acoustic space of this National landmark.

Architect John Eberson, under the direction of Karl Hoblitzelle, designed The Majestic Theatre to be the preeminent vaudeville house of the southwest. Constructed as Interstate Amusement Company’s flagship theater, the $2 million Renaissance Revival style structure opened on April 11, 1921 to great fanfare. THE MAJESTIC UNPLUGGED will celebrate the wonderful sound of the renovated hall with an all-acoustic (no amplification) performance of some of the greatest music of the golden years of the theater, from its opening in 1921 to its closing in 1973. Songs by composers from Jerome Kern to Elton John will be presented by your favorite Lyric Stage singers. Join us as we experience the purity of the human voice in its natural state, enhanced only by the acclaimed acoustics of The Majestic Theatre.

Lyric Stage IDO! IDO!

I DO! I DO!

February 14-17, 2019

The story of a marriage is at the center of I Do! I Do!, an intimate and nostalgic work by Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones (The Fantasticks). Based on Jan de Hartog’s The Fourposter and written as a star vehicle for theatre legends Mary Martin and Robert Preston, the original Broadway production received seven Tony Award nominations.

The show begins with Michael and Agnes on their wedding day. Their vows behind them, they look forward to spending the rest of their lives together. We watch as they go through their wedding night jitters, raise a family and negotiate midlife crises. Then, after 50 years of marriage, the couple leaves their house to the next pair of newlyweds. This touching story of two soul mates navigating the perils of life is set to Schmidt and Jones’ tuneful, charming score that features the hit song “My Cup Runneth Over.”
