After a challenging year of quarantines and the search for vaccinations, Cape May Stage is the destination for laughter – medically proven to lower one’s blood pressure.
“Ann'' by Holland Taylor, directed by Marlena Lustik and starring Kate McCauley Hathaway as Ann Richards (the former Texas Governor) will open our season on June 30th in our beautiful Robert Shackleton Playhouse. “We wanted to be open by July 4” said Producing Artistic Director, Roy Steinberg. Cape May Stage has a long history of bringing women directors, designers, and stage managers to its productions. In fact, Cape May Stage was among the first in the nation to present an all female playwright season. For “Ann”, Roy Steinberg said “we wanted to keep our tradition of having a strong lead like Kate McCauley Hathaway with a strong female crew, so we brought back the same crew that brought “Erma Bombeck - At Wit’s End” alive to Cape May Stage.” “Ann runs June 30th through August 22nd, Tuesday-Sunday at 8:00 PM.
Next up will be “The Last of the Red Hot Lovers'' by Neil Simon with some favorite Cape May Stage actors opening up September 22nd and running through November 21st. This hilarious comedy classic, examines what it means to grow older, and asks the question, “What do you do when it seems as if your life hasn’t been fully lived?”
Kicking off the holiday season will be a new version of “Adopt a Sailor” by Charles Evered opening December 8th and playing through December 30, 2021. “Adopt a Sailor- The Holiday Edition” is a witty, endearing comedy about a frazzled NYC couple who "adopt" a quiet young sailor from Turkey Scratch, AR during the holidays. Embarrassing secrets are revealed--and tempers are tested--in a night the three will never forget!
We also will have musical treats planned throughout the season in all sorts of venues including our virtual theater. Our new digital theater that debuted in April 2020 that allowed us to connect with others across the country, across the world, & across all things that could divide us from our common humanity. We will continue forging forward with new Digital Readings, new Broadway Series and new in 2021, interviews with Cape May locals. All of us tell stories about ourselves. Stories define us. To know someone well is to know their story—the experiences that have shaped them, the trials & turning points that have tested them. In a time of such an unsettling transition, telling a compelling story can inspire, motivate, and enrich the lives of the people around us.
For 2021 we are still cautiously optimistic that we will be able to open and we will continue making as many plans as we can and to stay transparent as possible. We are so grateful for your past support and invite you to stay onboard in this history-making time.
