Cape May Stage unveils its 2026 season

Cape May Stage has unveiled an ambitious and timely 2026 season, offering a thoughtfully curated lineup of plays, musical events, and special presentations designed to resonate with contemporary audiences. Presented at the historic Robert Shackleton Playhouse in Cape May, New Jersey, the season reflects a balance of humor, heart, and reflection—hallmarks of the company’s commitment to intimate, actor-driven storytelling.

Producing Artistic Director Roy Steinberg emphasized the relevance of this year’s programming, noting that each production engages directly with themes shaping today’s cultural and social conversations. From the foundations of American democracy to the complexities of human connection in a digital age, the season invites audiences to explore meaningful ideas through the shared experience of live performance.

The season begins on June 3 with What the Constitution Means to Me, Heidi Schreck’s Tony-nominated play. Directed by Steinberg, the production arrives at a poignant moment as the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Blending personal narrative with constitutional history, the play examines how America’s founding document continues to influence individual lives across generations. Both humorous and deeply affecting, the work encourages audiences to reconsider the Constitution’s role in shaping modern society. The production runs through June 28.

Over the Fourth of July holiday, Cape May Stage presents a special limited engagement, Together Off-Broadway: Ethel Merman and Mary Martin. Running July 4 through July 10, this concert-style event celebrates two of Broadway’s most iconic performers. Through music and storytelling, the show offers an intimate look at the friendship, humor, and artistry behind their legendary careers, highlighting their enduring impact on American musical theater.

The summer season continues with Kalamazoo, a romantic comedy by Michelle Kholos Brooks and Kelly Younger, opening July 15. Directed by Josh Iacovelli, the play follows two seniors navigating the challenges of online dating later in life. As they confront vulnerability, loneliness, and the possibility of new love, Kalamazoo delivers both laughter and emotional depth. Praised for its warmth and intelligence, the play runs through August 23 and serves as a reminder that connection can be found at any stage of life.

In the fall, Cape May Stage turns its attention to the future with Your Name Means Dream by José Rivera. Opening September 9, the play explores the evolving relationship between humanity and artificial intelligence. Centered on an elderly woman and her AI caretaker, the story raises profound questions about memory, empathy, and what it truly means to be human. Directed by Steinberg, the production runs through October 18 and offers a thought-provoking look at technology’s role in shaping our emotional lives.

Later in October, the theater presents The American Soldier for a limited three-performance run from October 23 to October 25. Drawn from real letters written by service members, the piece provides an intimate glimpse into the experiences of those who serve. Both personal and powerful, the production underscores the human stories behind military service, offering audiences a moving tribute to sacrifice and resilience.

The holiday season brings back a crowd favorite with Murder for Two: The Holiday Edition, running November 18 through December 27. This fast-paced comedic musical mystery features two performers who take on a multitude of roles, combining sharp humor, rapid-fire dialogue, and virtuosic piano performance. Filled with festive energy, the production promises a lively and entertaining conclusion to the season.

In addition to its mainstage offerings, Cape May Stage will present its 2026 Broadway Series, featuring a range of special events. Highlights include a performance by tap dancer and soul singer Solomon Jaye on May 23, a comedy night titled Married, Single, and a Baby on September 27, and a holiday concert by the award-winning duo Nic + Desi on December 13.
